Q: What is the difference between glass and crystal?

A: Cut glass has been around for over 2000 years, whereas crystal glass has only been in existence since the middle of the 17th century. Crystal contains lead oxide which dramatically increases its weight as well as improves its clarity and transparency, whereas glass doesn’t.

Q: Physically, how can you tell the differences between glass and crystal?

A: Crystal is generally heavier in weight than glass, and it is brighter and clearer in appearance. Crystals are normally sold with cut patterns. Q: Recently I bought a pair of mouth-blown, hand-cut full lead crystal wine glasses, and they do not seem to be exactly the same size. Why is it?

A: Each piece of true hand cut lead crystal is a unique product of the individual artisan who produced it. As the crystal is mouth-blown and hand-cut, and not machine made, two pieces are never precisely the same. This slight variation is the beauty of mouth-blown, hand-cut full lead crystal.

Q: How do I take care of my crystal?

A: Full lead crystal is softer which makes it easier for the artisan to cut. This “softness” makes it more prone to fine scratches on its surfaces. Crystal should be stored properly, so as to reduce the chances of scratching, chipping and other blemishes to occur. Care should be taken when cleaning your crystal to avoid use of harsh detergents, excessive heat (both of which may be found in your automatic dishwasher) excessive cold, rapid temperature changes and abrasives. We strongly recommend that you wash your crystal by hand in warm water with a small amount of detergent, rinse then dry with a soft cloth.
